
So you are stood, undecided, at the chocolate counter. You scan the shelf for the fourth time and are still no closer to choosing the Dairy Milk or the Galaxy.
A final look and you reach for the Dairy Milk, but a last moment impulse thrusts your hand towards the Galaxy….and…finally! You pick up the Galaxy and, like a dog with its new toy, walk proudly towards the counter to purchase your prize of decision.
Have you been here before? Now it may not have happened exactly like that, but you have had moments of decision. In fact you have them all the time.
Maybe you’ve actually had the one above. I don’t know. But what I do know is you have a choice in every moment to be happy. You can literally choose happiness!
Go ahead and try it now. Right now, whatever you are doing, be happy! I know you can do it, so go on and do it.
It’s easy isn’t it? So what did you do? In fact, what have you done every time you’ve ever ben happy?
Most people beleive that their happiness is due to something that happens to them or for them. They believe that happiness just shows up due to these circumstances and they have no control over it.
Well, I say rubbish to that! If you just followed the above exercise and chose to be happy, then it stands to reason you can choose happiness at any time, any moment, in any place, wthin any circumstance.
Why does it seem that this is not possible?
Because it has not been an experience you have had or witnessed first hand. Your happiness probably meanders in and quietly leaves like that almost elusive cool breeze on the scorching summers day.
So how can you even believe in such a thing being possible? Your belief in your ability to choose happiness whenever you please will grow with your actually doing it.
‘How do I do it?’ I hear you ask. Now that is a great question.
If you didn’t make yourself happy a moment ago, try it now. Just be happy…
What did you do to get there? What, specifically, did you do to make yourself happy?
Let me give you a hand:
I’m sure you would have smiled, right?
Did your breathing become a little slower and fuller?
Did your chin lift a little? Maybe your eyes looked up too?
Did you think of a memory of a good time?
Maybe you said something to yourself about being happy?
You see, it’s simple to figure out because there are certain habitual things you do when you are happy.
There are 3 particular things you do that run alongside all of your emotions:
1) Place your body in certain positions. Your body is conditioned to do certain things when you experience a particular emotion. Notice what you do with your hands, head, face, breathing, feet, shoulders, chest, arms, legs etc. next time you experience any emotion. You will begin to notice patterns.
2) What you focus on. Think about something that makes you happy and you will immediately feel happy. Think about something that makes you angry and you will experience this emotion too. Your thoughts are a gateway to your feelings.
3) What you say. If you say you can’t do something, then you won’t do it. If you say you can do something, then you will do it. Watch your innner and outer voice. Notice what you are saying, because what you are saying is a great indication of what you are feeling and also your words can create your emotions.
Most people feel that something has to happen for happiness to then happen. A little like the chicken and the egg debate, ‘which one came first?’ Do we need something or someone to make us feel happy then we place our body, focus and words in positions of happiness? Or can we put our body, focus and words in alignment with happiness and thus feel happy at choice?
Yes to both!
You can simply allow external circumstances to control your emotions or you can take control of them yourself. Which do you choose?!
Taking control of your emotions is the most important factor to consider in your life. After all, why do you do everyting you do? If you think a bout it, I believe you will find the answer is that you do what you do in life in the pursuit of happiness.
